Gap Year Coaching Opportunity – Australia

Gippsland Grammar is an Anglican Coeducational Independent school in regional Victoria, Australia.  Our well established school rowing program has enjoyed great success with regular appearances and medal success at major Victorian State Championships and Australian National Championships.

We are seeking at least three final year University students (undergraduate or postgraduate) with coxing or sculling experience to add significant value to the School’s rowing program as part of a graduate gap year opportunity.  This year marks the second year under the direction of our new Director of Rowing.  You will be intrinsically involved in continuing to develop a newly established culture of pride, professionalism and quality performance which will continue beyond your time with us.

Your degree subject, strengths and interests will be taken into consideration when allocating an area of responsibility and a crew or squad.  Experience in coaching is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.  The secondary duties will be allocated to you based on your area of expertise.  The Director of Rowing is seeking candidates with the following specific fields of expertise and experience:

  • Strength and Conditioning or similar (can include Sports Physiology, Sports Therapy, Sports Physiotherapy, Sports and Exercise Science, Injury prevention and rehabilitation or related subjects)
  • Coxing
  • Boat Maintenance and fleet management

Gippsland Grammar is interested to hear from any and all candidates who believe they can work as part of a coaching team to add significant value to the rowing program, beyond their skills on the water as a sculling coach.

The successful candidate will be required from mid to late July until Friday 31 March 2017.  You will be provided with a small living allowance and accommodation which includes internet and utility bills.  This opportunity is available through a Special Program Visa (subclass 416). This visa class is not available to anyone who has previously travelled to Australia on a working holiday or working visa.

If you are interested in a position as an Assistant Coach or wish to request further information, please contact the Director of Rowing, Peter Campbell (peter.campbell@gippslandgs.vic.edu.au) by email with your rowing specific CV, a cover letter explaining how you can contribute to our program and details of two rowing referees.  The deadline for application is Friday 6 May.  Interviews will be held via Skype or telephone shortly thereafter.   Final offers will be made to the successful candidates by mid-June to allow one month to secure a visa and flights.  Successful candidates will be financially responsible for visa charges, flights and travel insurance.

Gippsland Grammar is committed to providing a child safe environment.  Employees of the school must hold a current Working With Children check, this may be applied for upon arrival in Australia.
