Any ideas on why my upper back hurts when I erg??

    1. Rowperfect

      Debbie

The short answer is No, no idea at all!
Ergos (fixed head C2s) are not like rowing – you have a full stop at the catch and have to change direction with no slippage and your back/knees take the strain. It has been proven to be 6x more strain than a boat or a dynamic (Rowperfect) ergo.
Read the articles on this page https://www.rowperfect.co.uk/articles/ particularly the bit highlighted on Dynamic versus Static ergs.

If your body is not 100% robust you’ll feel more strain. Continued use exacerbates that strain and can lead to injury and pain.
I am guessing that’s what happened to you….

But I don’t know for sure why your back hurts.

      The Longer answer is
      – get someone to video you erging
      – get them to video you sculling / rowing and see if your technique is different.
Many people lean back more on the ergo, haul themselves up the slide using the foot straps, over-compress at the catch and these can all add to poor technique.

      Try a couple of things
      1. If you can only use C2 do it with your feet not strapped in
      2. buy sliders for the C2 ($200 isn) to simulate a more dynamic movement
      3. Best still get a Rowperfect or stop erging and use the river or a tank instead.
      4. Improve your flexibility (Yoga for Rowers is a good book – we sell it)
      5. Read the Rowperfect Challenge ebook https://www.rowperfect.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/the-rowperfect-challenge-by-m-mcleod-jones.pdf

Then come back here and tell me what you learn.

      Good luck, Rebecca

Thanks Rebecca! I will re-read your comments and the articles tomorrow. A lot of good information! I will get back to you

  4. Chris George

Pity they were not using them as rowing simulators rather than “ergs” Someone out to explain to them the position of the finish and the catch
