Teaching timing to rowing beginners

Advertisements

I lead a class teaching learn to row to adult beginners. It was too windy to row that weekend and so we ended up in the gym.
Take a look at the videos showing what we did.

I paired an experienced rower with a beginner

Each pair held a one meter long piece of plastic tubing (cheap from the builders merchants) in their (left / right) hand so their handles are connected.

They row together and the experienced athlete sets a clear “pattern” of the stroke and the novice can feel their movement through the connected handle.

What the beginner rower learns

They can tell

  • Arms / body sequence off the backstops
  • Timing of push at front stops
  • Tap down at the finish

Compare the two pairs in the next video – the one on the left are a bit more synchronised.  But the pair on the right got the idea very quickly!

Connected Rowing Machines

The RP3 is a rowing machine where you can buy Link Bars to join two RP3 machines together and also a handle connector giving you maximum opportunity to teach your crew how to combine their power in the rowing stroke.
