Switching sport to try rowing crew

What advice do you have for new crew (rowing) players?

I’ve been a competitive runner (cross country, track) and soccer player my whole life, and I am looking to make the switch to crew. Our advice for anyone wanting to start learning to row and scull is to find a good club programme with a strong coaching team

and a track record of winning at novice (beginner) status at the local and national level.

Starting something new is not easy for adults. Good tuition is essential because if you get it right first, you won’t have to un-learn errors later. This is SO important.

You don’t say which country you live in but find your national rowing federation website – most of them list clubs, by geography. Don’t assume your nearest club is the only one.

Go to the rowing results website and find the names of the clubs whose crews made the final in the National Rowing Championships, the Regional Regattas and / or Masters events (if you are over 27 years old you are a Master!). Those are the ones worth targeting because they will have a strong tuition program, a good understanding of what it takes to win and how to teach it to newcomers.

Winning is FUN.
