Racing yesterday is Andy Baxter’s account of his adventure with rowing legend, Steve Keisling, to attend the US Rowing selection trials for the mens pair at the Beijing Olympics 2008. US Rowing holds open trials for all its crews and so anybody can turn up and race the national team. Baxter and Keisling were 42 and 49 when they turned up to race and heads turned.
The story catalogues their extraordinary adventure training for 14 months on a lake in Oregon in pursuit of this dream. For Keisling – who was in the 1980 Moscow Olympic boycott Squad it took him back to his career highpoint and for Baxter it took him way beyond anything he’d ever previously dreamed.
