Rushing into the catch in rowing

Today we have a challenge for coaches.  This video shows you how the stern of the boat dips down into the water if you mis-judge the catch timing.

When learning how to coach one of the key skills is to develop an eye for the technique that athletes are using versus what you want them to do.

It’s only a few strokes but look at the stroke girl’s seat – answer these questions

  • When does she arrive at full compression and the slide wheels stop?
  • When do her blades go into the water?
  • When does she square her blades?
  • Does any of this change when she changes from rushing into the catch to rowing without rushing?
