This week in the rowing online news several stories caught our eye:

  • It’s the first time a US athlete has been nominated to the Sullivan Awards.  The nominee is Jason Read.

Read has been a member of the U.S. rowing team since 1995 when he made his junior debut. Read is a rowing coach, volunteer firefighter and EMT. He received an award for his rescue work at Ground Zero on 9/11.

  • Penny Chuter was British Head Coach in 1980s and her talk in Falmouth tells her life story with rowing and key projects such as getting women to race 2k internationally
  • Want to see the Rowperfect software running?  Here’s a video of 5 minutes work: the numbers are top row Time; Rate; Joules.  Bottom row: PeakForce%; Drag [K]; Stroke length cms.  It is a very impressive performance.  You can see the sensitivity of the software to small variations in technique – watch the right side of the curve change every so slightly every stroke.  The best strokes are those where this line is convex not straight.  That shows more power in 2nd half.
  • Pocock Racing Shells announce the first ‘coach-con’ conference any US college coach can apply and you only need to pay to get to Seattle.
  • A new rowing book about John Casey, awesome veteran athlete:  Room for Improvement.
