Henley Royal Regatta roundup – Saturday

Another fine day at Henley as records tumbled and crews got beaten by underdogs.  Records for the Barrier were set in the Fawley and Remenham events and a record to Fawley in the Double Sculls by the French crew.  Clearly the wind has dropped.

  • The GB womens quad scull was described as a “masterclass in sculling” as they comprehensively  defeated the Canadian crew.  The programme lists them as “Gloucester Rowing Club and Leander Club”.  Clearly St Andrew RC (Katherine Grainger’s home) was the last one out of the hat and got omitted. Poor Scotland.
  • The New Zealand eight beat the GB eight in the Grand.  The NZ crew has one 19 year old and three U23s on board.
  • Stuart Mackenzie the Australian sculler who won the Diamonds six times consecutively from 1957 — 1962 met his nemesis, Vyacheslav Ivanov, the Soviet triple Olympic single scull champion for the first time in 50 years.

  • Michael Arms the NZ second sculler, fell into the water.  After his race, he came back to the pontoons and was watching the bank and lost his balance while trying to land.  The tide swept him away down river and the safety boat had to rescue him.
  • Weed was found on the course – which had to be ‘cleared’.  Although why this was only found today is a mystery.
  • Thames RC did a row-past to celebrate 150 years of existence which was lovely for Pauline Rayner the doyenne of the club’s womens section.
  • West End coach, John White met up with former member and 1984 Oympic Gold medallist Shane O’Brien – snapped them together setting the world to rights.
