How was your Henley Regatta 2019 Weekend?
What a spectacle: 17 Nations. 660 Starts. 1`900 Athletes. Only half of them could compete in the event itself.
Henley Royal Regatta, founded in 1839, is (one of the) best-known rowing regattas in the world. It is renowned for its gladiatorial match-racing. It is one of the highlights of the summer sporting and social calendar in the UK, as well as the rowing calendar internationally. Also this year it attracted 300,000 visitors over a five-day period from the 3rd until the 7th of Juli 2019. More than 300 races were staged at the Regatta. It is featuring Olympians and emerging stars from around the world.
Breaking Records again
2019 was special: Henley Royal Regatta was breaking records again this year. The Regatta showed with 660 entries, an increase of almost 100 on the benchmark set in 2018. There were 159 overseas crews representing 17 nations with 1900 athletes.
Highlights of the 2019 entry include the mixed military crews of the King’s Cup, strong international representation including the first-ever entry from Saudi Arabia and the return of a number of past champions in several highly-competitive events. The record entry emphasises the prestige and popularity of the Regatta. With only 340 crews able to compete due to the tight schedule, almost half the entrants went home after competing in qualifying races and did not race at the event itself. Maybe next year.
