Does white spirit or acetone help rowing blisters?

A question from a reader:

Betty Ann asked a general question

I rowed long ago for college back in the ’78-80. When we had open blisters we went straight to the chem lab and poured acetone on our hands and it formed a “second skin”. Have you heard of anyone doing that and is it safe? My trainer wants to do it but I don’t think its a good idea.

Betty Ann, please, please do not let your team do the chem lab trick. It’s a terrible abuse of your skin! There are lots of ‘urban myths’ from rowers around blister management that include white spirit and also urine as solutions to blisters. All are mis-guided in my opinion.

Many rowers and coaches ask us about blisters. So much that we commissioned a mini-ebook on the topic of skin injuries and blister management – it’s available for sale in our shop.

In there you’ll find both advice on good hygiene when around rivers, pollutants, how to tape your hand to prevent blisters, what to do with other skin injuries (coccyx or slide bites). I hope you find it useful!
