Hi Rebecca, hi Dave (post hair cut I believe),

I am living and rowing in Vienna. I can’t help myself. Not only am I stroking my clubs MastersC VIII (????) but I have been coaching a couple of very good scullers (both female, both tall, both 27yrs old) and my VIII of course. I have always been a great advocate of the great late Harry but what I lack from his experiences is a short list of his best drills. Rebecca, specifically, would you mind very much jotting down a few?

While I am here, in a club not far from me a couple of very enthusiastic rowers cum engineers have built a pair/2x rowing machine the runs on a coupled track with proper oar handles, the ability to feather and proper side to side boat balance. It is incredible. Do you know about it? Do you want to know about it? I think it is the only one in existence and i am not sure what they intend to do with it. As a realistic training aid and off the water (it freezes here in the winter from Nov to Mar) rowing machine it is most valuable. It is also coupled to a computer (of course).

Thought I would mention it. Austria is so limited in its rowing that some things go unnoticed.

    Hope you are all well.

    Kind Regards,
    Frank Llewellyn

Frank thanks for this great comment! We’d be very interested in seeing your rowing machine – send some photos and if you can manage a short article, we’ll publish it on the blog.

I have had a few drills from Harry – the main one that springs to mind is ‘wide grip’ where you slide your hands down the handles to increase the loading and row slowly with high leverage to improve your technique delivering power.

But let me ask our readership if they can help!
