Concept II erg drag factor

I have a Concept II erg. What drag factor should I set it on?

I’m not an expert but I do know there are a range of settings based on age, sex and weight.

Concept 2 write this on their website understanding drag factor

This is written for Crossfit indoor rowing athletes (may not suit rowers) but seems helpful.

I was always told a rule of thumb

  • Junior Women drag factor 110
  • Junior Men drag factor 120
  • Senior Women drag factor 130
  • Senior Men drag factor 140

But that may be outdated.

However on a Concept 2 discussion board I found the following observation

“Drag factor is there so you can configure your ergo to match the drag you’re going to get in a boat. The variability is there so you can set up for a 2, 4 or 8.
Correlating for gender, height, weight isn’t logical.”

I hope this gives you enough information to make a decision!
Do any readers have advice on how to set drag factor on C2?

My experience, after having been rowing since early 80′, is that most people set the drag factor too high.
If the drag factor is set at a high level, you will get an un-normal proportion between the time of taking the stroke and the recovery time.
Further more the risk of bag-injury will increase.
In most of my training programs, I have the drag factor set to 105, which give me a smooth stroke.
