Commonwealth Rowing Regatta 2014

Just found that there is rowing at the Commonwealth Games – hooray for Bonnie Scotland.   It used to be a part of the main event, but that got

discontinued and a special, parallel organisation formed to host regattas in the years when the event was in a part of the world who wanted to row (just my bias talking there).

The Commonwealth Rowing Championships is held every 4 years in the same year as the Commonwealth Games. It is organised by the host nation under the direction of the Commonwealth Rowing Association.

Here’s the website…. and schedule of events. Dates are 9th/10th August – Thanks to Tom Killick for the info.

And it appears the crews are racing 500m or 1500m races…. WTF?

… browse to Team Composition page and I learn how they’ve composed the event and the teams – quite a smart offering mix of scull and sweep, light and heavyweights.

1.  Teams are restricted to a maximum of 6 male and 6 female athletes.

2.  For the Men’s 4- and Women’s 4x events two members of the crew must be lightweight athletes and all members of the crew must have competed in events earlier in the Championships.
So that’s why there is a limited programme.  See image below for the full schedule of original events (lighties in with heavies) and an exhibition 8s race at the end!  I guess that’s a mixed sex crew… who coxes?

And maybe they have to wear the amazing Scottish team kilts too…. picnic rugs all round.

UPDATE: The Draw is up there is a link from the Scottish Rowing website-a good entry including entries from countries not usually associated with rowing. Thanks to Ian “Chalky” White for the update here.

Will this event be televised ?

    1. Rebecca Caroe

Hi Nicola – I’ll try to find out by asking @scottishrowing on twitter.

    2. Ian White

CR event is not being televised.

Someone told me that the reason that it’s been shortened to 1500m is that one end of the lake was commandeered for the triathlon swimming event…

    1. Ian White

The course for the CR is shortened due to the CG Triathlon having to put a temporary dam in place across the normal rowing/canoeing finish line as a measure to control water quality which apparently was an issue at the Triathlon test event last summer. Make no mistake, this was fought by Scottish Rowing as it affected all rowing events and on water rowing training since last November. It would have been financially cheaper/more cost effective to move the CG Triathlon to Loch Lomond, a very scenic and iconic venue which regularly hosts Triathlons.
The 2010 CR at Welland City, Ontario, Canada was held over 2000m / 500m and the teams consisted of 2 LWT and 2 Open Weight Male and Female athletes for each team. The event was a serious test of fitness and skill requiring all athletes to have strong skills in both Sculling and Sweep with the capacity to race over the usual 2000m as well as sprint over 500m. The overall winner of the team points was Canada with Scotland 2nd, Australia 3rd and England 4th. My abiding memory of the regatta was the Scotland Eight winning the mixed demonstration Eights closely challenged by Canada. Each eight consisted of the 8 athletes in the team coxed by experienced young coxes, drawn by ballot, from the host club, South Niagara. The 2014 CR racing is on Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th of August with full details from the website: http://www.crc2014.info/index.php/schedule-of-events

Sorry to disappoint but there is still no rowing at the Commonwealth Games.

This is the commonwealth regatta which as your post states

“The Commonwealth Rowing Championships is held every 4 years in the same year as the Commonwealth Games. It is organised by the host nation under the direction of the Commonwealth Rowing Association.”

    Although British Ropwing website says

A” Commonwealth Rowing Championships regatta has been organised in the year of the Commonwealth Games since 1986, although rowing is not currently included in the Games themselves”

It is not necessarily in the same country as the Games them selves sometimes it has not been in the same year e.g. 1999 in Canada.

Wikipedia gives this as an introduction.

The Commonwealth Rowing Championships are held in conjunction with the Commonwealth Games since rowing is no longer included in the Commonwealth Games programme (but it is hoped that rowing may return to the Games in 2018).

In 1994 and 1999 the Commonwealth Rowing Association organised a Commonwealth Rowing Regatta at Fanshawe Lake, London, Ontario, Canada.

In August 2002 the first Commonwealth Rowing Championships were held in Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, England, and the 2006 Championships were held at Strathclyde Park, Motherwell, Scotland.

The 2010 Championships were held on 31 July and 1 August at Welland, Ontario, Canada.

In August 2014 the Championships will be held, on a 1500 metre course, at Strathclyde Park, Motherwell, Scotland.

Don’t think you can blame the triathlon for it being shortened – the mixed triathlon event was on 25th July and the regatta is 9th and 10th August – I would have thoughty that was enough time to ready the course. Perhaps it is because there are a maximum of 6 men and 6 women to compete in all events?

crews are not racing 500 or 1500 – the 500 m events are also 1500 so it looks like a full schedule over 1500 and then some “fun” sprints in singles.
