Another excellent book by Mike Sullivan. He is an expert rower and a coach and so is very aware of the skills needed to safely handle a single scull.
Mike wrote this for his own club and so it should be adapted to the circumstances of YOUR river or lake.
Get this if you are new to coaching, new to single sculling or just need a refresher on good practice for your rowing club.
Extract||Be aware of temperatures and conditions, 100 degree rule should apply. 100 degree rule is that if air temp + water temp is less than 100 degrees I pay close attention to where and what I'm going to row, staying not only close to shore, but generally closer to home. (100 Fahrenheit is 37.7 degrees Celsius). Do not scull by yourself if water + air temp < 100. If you are not confident of swimming in open bay water, or cold water, please wear flotation. If you should tip over, recommend that you re-enter the boat from the water, as the mud can be very difficult to walk/stand in, though during high tide it's OK to swim boat to shore and re-enter boat from there.

The only real reason I only give this really rather informative little booklet only 4 stars is that is a tad overly US-centric. Pedantic perhaps... This is generally a well structured and thought out introduction to boat handling. That said, a few of the terms are pretty well restricted to the US (for example: the word 'dock' for landing stage and the use of fahrenheit), and it's clearly written for those who mostly row on tidal waters. The boat care section is excellent - a far too often overlooked exercise!
One addition would be that not all clubs have the same facilities or prevailing conditions and visiting crews often fail to take into account local safety rules or do not notice partly hidden obstructions. When visiting somewhere new, always ask a local about any specific local safety or circulation rules. After all, everyone wants to go home safely at the end of the day.Rating:
