Indoor Sculler

The latest models of  Rowperfect are the RP3 and Indoor Sculler.  Both  have improved design features yet retain the expert rowing simulation of Casper Rekers’ original Rowperfect.

This is the best tool to teach boat moving technique and to build fitness for on-water rowing and sculling.

The Rowperfect rowing machine is ideal for indoor rowing training for professional oarsmen and competitive rowers and scullers as well as an excellent home fitness exercise machine if you want to keep fit.

It’s the best way to learn how to “move” a boat using your body weight as well as legs, arms, back and gluteal muscles.

How to make your boat go fast

To maximise sculling or rowing boat speed you need four things:

  1. Aligned power forces between crew members
  2. Continuous delivery of power
  3. Fitness
  4. Blade handling skill.

Rowperfect can help you with the first three.

Highly skillful rowing requires precise coordination of the catch and power drive. The Rowperfect is the only rowing machine ergometer on which this essential skill can be developed.

The Rowperfect is the first rowing machine to accurately reproduce the physics of rowing it helps teach technique and prevents injury. Rowing World Champions and Olympic medallists confirm its effectiveness in helping them win those medals.

  • Moving fly wheel AND moving seat
  • Lowered fly wheel
  • Tilt seat to encourage use of core muscles
  • Adjustable resistance to match the gearing in your boat
  • Unique Rowperfect action that simulates rowing

Two models – what are the differences?

Rowperfect has been developed by two teams: one in The Netherlands (RP3) and one in Australia (Indoor Sculler).  They use the same base design of a dynamic ergometer; you can see the photos are very similar.  There are some design differences:

RP3

  • Uses computer software to show force curve
  • Adjusts read-out by athlete weight and boat class
  • Stainless steel construction

Indoor Sculler

  • Monitor with numeric display
  • Sprung handle to simulate the ‘give’ on an oar

I’ve been using this video for ten years as part of my Concept 2 Ergometer training. It features four pieces of increasing difficulty, rowed by top oarsmen from the Harvard HW men’s crew and the US National Team. Your perspective is from the bow seat, and for the most part, except on piece three, the coxswain’s commands are loud and clear. My least favorite piece is #3 anyway, since it is in a quad scull which I don’t like. Piece 2 and Piece 4 are really strenuous if you grip & rip. The last set (#4)is two four minute full-pressure pieces at about 30-32 STM, and you can truly bring back that feel of practice under a sadistic old goat of a coach with that. Overall, this is a great video for the dedicated indoor rower that will also serve the novice well. For me, it brought back that slightly sick feeling just before for a race…"Ready all. ROW!." If there is one shortcoming it would be that the pieces are not planned for standard distances like 2000 meters. You get an hour of good rowing here, though, on the beautiful Charles. Strongly recommended.

HI, I recently bought a 2nd hand RP ( early model) I am an oarsman and coach and thought I could row it – but cannot stop hitting fromtstops. the upward curve is at the front end of the machine, is that correct? or should it be at the seat end, has the previous owner assembled it back to front? hope you can clarify.

  6. Alan – I will reply to you offline as well but the reason you hit front stops is your technique.

First you have to check the bar is level.
download the original RP manual from here http://www.docstoc.com/docs/25403999/rpmanualdoc—Rowperfect
    and read the instructions.

Then if that is all good, try rowing in this manner
1 – leave the handle down and sit on the RP and “row” without holding the handle. Can you manage not to hit the front leg?
    2. Pick up the handle and start rowing legs only (arms straight and back still). Can you manage not to hit the front leg?
3 – keep legs going and add in the back swing. Can you manage not to hit the front leg?
4 – keep legs and back going and add in the arms. Can you manage not to hit the front leg?

I am guessing that at step 3 or 4 you will start hitting the front leg….two reasons. Either you are using your leg muscles to pull the flywheel towards you during the recovery phase which interrupts the smooth flowing of the momentum of the flywheel down the bar or your arm draw through to the recovery movement is not quite skilled enough to keep your seat in one place.

Please let us know how you get on… we can arrange a skype coaching session for you to give you some tuition if that helps?

Hi, just thought you would like to know as I thought the previous owner had assembled the machine the wrong way round, now corrected and in perfect working order
