Nathan Twaddle is in the New Zealand M2- and writes a fantastic summary of what it takes to prepare for a big race.
Race day insights
The night before
I try to not think about it too much. Getting to sleep is quite a tough thing. Sometimes I'll watch past races where we've done well or watch races of events that I think encapsulate what a good rowing race should be and possibly think about that when you go to sleep.
Surprisingly, I generally get to sleep reasonably well the night before a race, so it's a bit of a balancing act between relaxation and using that time to think about strategies you might want to employ the next day.
Because from the next morning, it really does just become an automatic routine, and there's not too much room to start thinking about what ifs, from that point.

My latest update comes with a warning on the dangers of the over enthusiastic consumption of chocolate bars.
After races we usually spend 40 minutes to an hour cooling down on stationary bikes inside. It is a good way to get food and fluids in while still getting the benefits of active recovery.
I had a wee treat lined up in the form of a snickers bar but it all went pear-shaped when I bit down, 'slipped' and ended up taking a chip out of one of my teeth, not a major one but enough to make it a bit sensitive.

Nathan Twaddle is blogging on the Team New Zealand website. He writes about the last training before the regatta and his Coach giving out praise.
It was pretty cold over the last month of training in New Zealand - especially with the frosts. I was wearing three layers on the bottom and four layers on top - some mornings on Lake Karapiro I even had these mini gloves on. When you do that you are normally mocked incessantly but it was that cold that I didn't care about the jibes. So it has been quite a contrast with the intense heat and humidity here in China.
Our first race went pretty well on Saturday though in context there were some interesting results from the other heats as well. It looks like it is going to be super close all the way and will go right down to the wire.

Still trawling the blogosphere and we've found another American blogging, Chris Liwski who is in the USA mens team but I can't find the crew he is in, maybe a spare? (he is blogging on WSJ China Journal with Jason Read) and also other members of the New Zealand team, Nathan Twaddle (M2-), Nicky Coles (W2-).
Thanks to RSR members for also spotting Gearoid Towey , IRL LM4- on the Irish Times site.
I will be adding their updates into my daily round-up.
