Rowperfect on YouTube

Monday, January 29th, 2007

During the World Rowing Championships , the TV reporters borrowed a Rowperfect from us for their reporter to try out a 500m piece coached and encouraged by the world famous Dan Topolski

Here's what they broadcast

And here's us filming them making the broadcast.

The lad done good.

He had never been on a RP before, never rowed or sculled.  Notice how he had no trouble keeping the seat in one place?  Never hit the front or back leg?

Seems Rowperfect is pretty easy to use and not just something for so-called "elite" athletes only.

Well done, Rob. (and Justus Janssen for filming it).

Changing Sides - exercises to aide the switch

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

I've been asked a couple of times recently (by my crews and others) "What can I do to make it easier to row on the other side?"

Here are some ideas to be working on:

Best drills

1 - Wriggle your fingers of inside hand as you go up the slide. Helps remind you not to hold on too tight and not to lift the blade for the catch with the inside hand (if you do you'll be late)

2 - Check inside arm is bent on recovery. If it's straight chances are you are really holding on with that hand and using it to guide the movement - it should be outside arm.

3 - Wide arm rowing (aka inside hand down the loom) do this with hand just off handle and then progress to ultra-wide with hand on fat part of loom

4 - Alternate hands holding the oar - draw power phase with outside hand and when you get to the finish tap down.  Then let go with outside hand and catch handle with inside hand - feather and guide handle towards catch, feather.  As you get to catch let go with inside hand and grasp with outside as you lift into the catch.  Progress to just holding handle lightly with the hand not 'doing the work' and then progress back to normal rowing.  You should still be able to loosen off the hand not working as a check that each hand is doing the right thing.

5 - Look out the side of the boat that you are rowing - helps the rotation.

write your session reminder on your foot post-it and every time you see it, do the drill (even if the rest of the crew isn't doing that drill).  They will forgive you as you make the changes.

Best thing is all these drills can be done during steady state paddling.

Rowing Tanks - not as pricey as you’d think!

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

Ever thought of installing an indoor rowing tank?

Durham Boat has devised a
tank that is modular and holds a lower volume of water than other designs.  This
enables athletes to row higher rates without the expense of a pumped water
tank.

Their pricing is around
half to two thirds comparable tanks.  We got a quote for a Putney club for an 8
man sculling and rowing tank in November 2006 and it was £75,000 including
delivery and fitting but excluding VAT.

Here is a series of photos showing an installation, fitting and final layout of an 8 man tank to Hudson River Rowing Association, USA.

German 8 win with Magik sweep gates

Friday, January 19th, 2007

German 8 using Magik  The Gold medal winning German Eight from last summer's World Rowing Championships used Magik Oarlocks.

Two of the athletes are at Cambridge University and used the oarlocks in the boat race. They were impressed with the effect it had on their boat performance and persuaded the crew to try and use the Magik Gates – and they won!

Thorsten Engelmann and Sebastian Schulte are currently in the CUBC squad and the Stroke man Bernd Heidicker was formerly at Cambridge.
